In the summer of 1997, some friends of mine convinced me to pack up and leave Washington DC for the summer, and travel to South Bass Island aka Put in Bay for the summer. The place that they worked lost one of their best bartenders and they needed someone who could handle heavy volume, and at the time, that was me.
In all of my 20 plus years in the restaurant business, I still remember this like it was yesterday. My friend Suzanne was waiting on a young couple that were typical tourists at the Bay. They were a nice African American couple probably in their early 30's and seemed very happy to be visiting Put in Bay for the day,
The gentleman ordered a beer while the lady ordered a Champagne Cocktail. Now for those of you that don't know, a true Champagne Cocktail is made from Champagne (duhhh), Cognac, Bitters and a sugar cube, and some people will put a cherry in it.
So as the service bartender this particular evening, I made the couples order, put it on the counter at the server station and went about serving the rest of the customers.
About 10 minutes later, Suzanne came back over to the bar crying. When I asked her what was wrong, I realized that she was laughing so hard she started tearing up.
She said to me that the gentleman at her table flagged her down and said in the nicest possible way,
"Pardon me.....(Pause)......., someone seems to have inadvertently placed a....(pause)........crouton.....(pause).........in my lady's cocktail."
I know you had to be there, but just imagine confidently ordering a drink, obviously having had it before because it wasn't on our non existent specialty drink menu, and thinking that the sugar cube was a crouton!!!
That's all for today.
